Starting at 00:33 on April 20, the SEA-ME-WE5 undersea cable that MPT (Myanma Posts and Telecommunications) uses for international connectivity developed a fault at sea near Indonesia, causing slower speeds across MPT’s mobile, FTTH, and related internet services.
MPT is coordinating with the relevant organizations to repair the faulty undersea cable as quickly as possible. In the meantime, MPT is working to add new connections and routes to boost internet speeds for the convenience of its customers, and will provide timely updates on the repair progress.
MPT sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience and thanks customers for their patience.
MPT is Myanmar’s first and leading telecom operator, having led the development of the country’s telecommunications sector for more than 130 years. It provides fixed-line and mobile telecom services to the public and businesses, operates the country’s largest nationwide 3G network, and runs Myanmar’s fastest, most advanced 4G/LTE+ network using MIMO 4×4 technology.
In July 2014, MPT signed a cooperation agreement with KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM), a joint venture owned by Japanese partners KDDI Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation. To accelerate the development of Myanmar’s telecom sector, MPT partnered with KDDI and Sumitomo to invest a combined $2 billion over ten years — one of the largest Japanese investments in Myanmar’s history.
With more than 8,000 employees, MPT continues to work alongside KSGM to advance Myanmar’s telecom sector, upholding its corporate social responsibility values as it works to help move the country forward. MPT currently serves more than 21 million customers.
