Now that AI has found its way into just about everything, it looks like Microsoft wants to turn Windows itself into an AI operating system. That’s why Microsoft has just introduced a new category of device called Copilot+ PCs. Copilot+ PCs come with built-in AI hardware and AI features baked into nearly the entire OS.
And that’s not all — Microsoft says it’s also adding a generative-AI-powered feature that can search back through apps, files, and content you’ve previously opened, along with a feature called Recall. Recall works like a kind of “photographic memory,” letting you search back through everything you’ve done or looked for on your computer. To power this feature, Windows 11 will run more than 40 AI models on the laptop itself. Another interesting detail: Copilot will also be able to use OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, announced just the week before. You’ll find Microsoft’s generative AI, Copilot, built quite deeply into Windows 11’s features as well.
The newly announced Copilot+ PCs can be thought of as Microsoft’s AI-focused Windows hardware. They come with enough power to run AI features smoothly, pairing at least 16GB of RAM with SSD storage. The first wave of Copilot+ PCs will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, offering up to 15 hours of web browsing and nearly 20 hours of video playback on battery.
The first Copilot+ PCs go on sale starting June 18, with prices starting at $999.
