Live video services featuring young, attractive women have become hugely popular among Chinese men, with millions of viewers tuning in every single day. China has the world’s largest population, and its male population significantly outnumbers its female population. That imbalance in supply and demand has helped these entertainment services thrive — the sector is now estimated to be worth as much as $4.3 billion, with popular women earning as much as six figures a month in some cases.

The government itself has allowed the industry to operate, under regulation. Last year, authorities shut down over 4,000 websites and around 18,000 workers for violating regulations. Here’s a closer look at the live video services offered by young women in China.

In China, the market for live-streaming services where young women entertain and chat with men has grown explosively. Every single day, millions of men tune in to watch these women online.

Some women perform, others simply chat, and some just share glimpses of their everyday lives. There are roughly 150 platforms offering these services in China, and experts estimate the market to be worth $4.3 billion. Even major companies like Tencent have moved into this space.

Popular streamers can earn six figures a month, split with the hosting platform. Part-time streamer Jing Qi told Reuters: “I want more people to watch me. Viewers give me digital coins as tips, which I can cash out. Someday, I’d like to marry a wealthy, good-looking man — tall, too.”

The Chinese government regulates this entertainment industry through its laws. Last July, authorities shut down more than 4,000 websites and revoked the licenses of 18,000 female entertainers for breaking the rules.
