As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting education and social development for the people of Myanmar, Ooredoo Myanmar, one of the country’s leading international telecommunications companies, has donated 100 million kyats to build a new school building at the Yadanar Mar Aung Taw Yar Parahita Monastic Education School in Ye Kyaw village, Min Gan Yoe village tract, Phyu Township, Taungoo District, Bago Region (East), to support the education of more than 100 children. The donation was made through Ooredoo’s “1 Kyat for Every Minute You Talk” program, under which Ooredoo Myanmar donates 1 kyat from its revenue for every minute of Ooredoo-to-Ooredoo calls made by its customers.

Around 100 students from the surrounding community currently study at the Yadanar Mar Aung Taw Yar Parahita Monastic Education School. The primary-level Buddhist school was founded by the abbot, Sayadaw U Ottara, with the aim of helping local children learn to read and write. Because the community is impoverished, the school has relied on charitable donations to keep operating and to give children access to education.
U Ottara, the abbot and head of the Yadanar Mar Aung Taw Yar Parahita Monastic Education School, said, “I am overjoyed that Ooredoo Myanmar has come to donate a sturdy, weatherproof school building like this. It’s extremely difficult for anyone in our community to afford to build a school building, since there are few people here who can. We didn’t have enough classrooms or space, so we had to teach multiple grades in a single hall, facing many difficulties. The classroom we’ve been using has holes in the tin roof, so it doesn’t keep out the rain and wind properly, and children have been catching colds and getting sick. Now that Ooredoo is donating this sturdy, weatherproof school building, parents and students can feel more at ease and are overjoyed.”

Ooredoo Myanmar’s “Talk More, Ooredoo Donates More” program, aimed at supporting education and social development for communities in need across Myanmar, was first launched in September 2017. On July 1, 2023, it was relaunched as the “1 Kyat for Every Minute You Talk” program. Under the original program, Ooredoo Myanmar supported a total of 51 education and social development projects, including 40 school buildings for children’s free education, benefiting more than 30,000 students each year. This latest donation is the first under the relaunched “1 Kyat for Every Minute You Talk” program launched on July 1, 2023, and Ooredoo will continue to provide support for education wherever it is needed through this program.
