MPT’s Sustainable Practices Extend to Waste Management Initiatives

MPT, Myanmar’s first and leading telecommunications operator, has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by introducing a Waste Management Program aimed at promoting a green environment within its organization. The program, which includes recycling wastepaper and plastic, was initiated on 22 May 2023, with a focus on reducing disposal costs (Reduce), reusing materials in good condition (Reuse), and fostering a culture of recycling across all workplaces (Recycle).

The shift towards digital communication methods has been a transformative trend in recent years, yet the persistent use of paper and plastic remains a global environmental concern. Recognizing the importance of waste reduction and recycling, MPT has embarked on a journey to create a more sustainable workplace environment through its Waste Management Program.

The recent introduction of a trial paper waste management program at 5 offices in the Yangon Region, starting on 22nd May 2023, marked a significant step towards promoting sustainable practices. Following the successful completion of the trial period, MPT has now extended its paper waste management initiative to 10 head offices in the Yangon Region, demonstrating the company’s dedication to creating a greener workplace environment.

In parallel, MPT has also launched a trial period for plastic waste management at 3 offices in the Yangon Region, running from 18 th December 2023 to the end of March 2024. The positive outcomes of this trial are expected to pave the way for the continuous implementation of plastic waste management practices across all MPT workplaces, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

As a result of these proactive initiatives, MPT has successfully collected and diverted 1,020 kg of paper waste from landfills by the end of January 2024. This waste has been responsibly managed through collaboration with the Waste Management Company (Golden Dowa Eco-System Myanmar Co., Ltd which is providing Waste Management Services in Japan and Southeast Asia), underscoring MPT’s dedication to sustainable waste disposal practices.

The introduction of the Waste Management Program underscores our dedication to promoting a green workplace and contributing to environmental conservation efforts. We believe that these initiatives will not only benefit the environment but also enhance workplace safety and efficiency, while potentially leading to cost savings through waste reduction and recycling.”

As part of its broader sustainability strategy, MPT has actively engaged in tree planting initiatives since 2017, resulting in the planting of over 17,000 trees in collaboration with local environmental organizations and NGOs. Additionally, the introduction of the E-invoice system in 2020 reflects MPT’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing customer convenience.
