Internet service providers (ISPs) in Thailand have emailed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, requesting that 600 Facebook pages accused of harming the country in various ways be taken down.
These 600 pages are among 6,900 web pages that a Thai court has ordered blocked since 2015 for various reasons. Because these pages have security measures that make them hard to take down through normal means, the request has now been escalated all the way to the top. Thai ISPs have reportedly asked Mark Zuckerberg directly to remove 600 Facebook pages accused of harming Thailand. These ISPs are members of the Thai Internet Service Provider Association (Tispa).
Tispa chairman Morakot Kulthamyothin said the ISPs received a directive from Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to check whether the 600 court-ordered Facebook pages were still accessible.
These Facebook pages are among the 6,900 web pages Thai courts have ordered blocked since 2015. “We can’t block those 600 pages ourselves, because they’re encrypted and their host servers are located overseas. That’s why we emailed Facebook’s CEO directly and are waiting for a response,” Morakot said.
Morakot added that the email sent to Zuckerberg included links to the pages in question and explained in detail how the content on those pages could harm Thailand’s economy and national security.
