Adobe, which offers tools and software for creative design work, has just introduced a new AI tool called Firefly to users within the past few days.
Images created using Firefly were first shown off at the Adobe Summit 2023 event, marking Firefly’s official introduction. Like other image-generating AI tools, Firefly works by editing and generating images based on text commands. While it’s intended to eventually create many kinds of content, the first Firefly model focuses mainly on generating images and text effects. For example, users can highlight a lighthouse or any other object within an image, and Adobe Firefly can then generate a variety of lighthouse-style designs based on it.

Firefly, which Adobe has just introduced, is a first step, and it has been trained on licensed content and public domain content from Adobe Stock, using licensed images numbering in the thousands and tens of thousands created by creators. It also uses a powerful style engine to produce creative photos, art, graphics, and text effects. Adobe has also been training its AI-generated content using human-made content for a few years now, and creators who don’t want their created images included in that training can add a “do not train” tag.
According to Adobe, content created using Firefly can also be used for commercial purposes. Adobe is also reportedly planning a system that will indicate which Adobe Stock contributor’s work was referenced in the images Firefly generates through its training. It’s also reportedly planning to make Firefly available across various platforms so that it can be easily integrated into users’ workflows.

Adobe acquired the company Figma in September 2022 and has said it will integrate it with its other products. The newly introduced Firefly is also currently in its first private beta.
Since 2022, various companies have been developing all kinds of technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate images, write text, and create synthetic voices, so it will be interesting to see which companies introduce which advanced new technologies without delay during 2023.
