Robotics researcher Handaru, also known as maHidaka, has demonstrated an astonishing project that could almost be called “gamification”: a system that lets you control your own facial muscles using a gamepad.

ROS-Face is a technology, built on the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, that lets you control the muscles on a person’s face using a regular gamepad — a PlayStation controller, a Logitech controller, or even a Nintendo Switch controller. The system works by pressing buttons to send precisely controlled electrical current strong enough to activate specific facial muscles.
“To put it simply, ROS is like LEGO blocks — it connects hardware components (like motors, sensors, and computers) together,” the creator wrote. Using this kind of technology to control muscle movement opens up far more opportunities to easily connect existing robotic components and computers to the human face’s own physical configuration.
Besides facial muscles, the creator also posted a video on the X platform showing hand movements being controlled the same way.
