ATOM Reports Surge in Mobile Data Use and Telecoms Services on New Year's Eve

Between the evening of December 31, 2022 and 2 a.m. on January 1, 2023, mobile data usage on ATOM’s network spiked sharply during the New Year countdown period, according to the operator’s year-end usage data.

ATOM’s data shows that during the peak hour of the New Year celebrations, overall mobile usage was 74% higher than a typical day. Usage rose across all network types, climbing 72% on 4G, 86% on 3G, and as much as 102% on 2G. The surge was driven by a growing number of ATOM subscribers using messaging apps and social media to send New Year greetings to family and friends.

Compared with the days before New Year’s Eve, usage of the most popular messaging apps among ATOM subscribers jumped as well: WhatsApp usage rose 637% and Viber usage rose 125%.

Voice call minutes during the New Year period climbed as much as 265% above a typical day’s calling volume, while SMS traffic hit a record high, up 287%. In total, ATOM subscribers sent around 1.75 million text messages over its network during the New Year period.

“As part of our #BeyondBetter commitment to better connectivity and service, the ATOM team spent months preparing for this peak usage period around New Year’s. That preparation included scheduling as little maintenance work as possible so subscribers could use the network smoothly, and upgrading equipment at cell sites expected to see higher-than-normal traffic. Every year we see mobile data usage climb further as more people turn to messaging apps and social media to post and share photos and videos over the New Year period,” said Yash Pal Singh, ATOM’s Chief Technology Officer.
