When ChatGPT, an AI-focused tool, first launched, it was only accessible through the web version. An iOS app gradually followed, but no Android version had been released — until, two months after the iOS app’s launch, OpenAI announced on July 22 that it would also release a ChatGPT app for Android users.
While it isn’t available to download just yet, pre-orders have been open on the Google Play Store since Friday, July 21. Since the iOS app saw more than 500,000 downloads on the Apple App Store within its first six days, it remains to be seen how many downloads the upcoming Android app will get on the Google Play Store.
While OpenAI’s other AI tools, alongside ChatGPT, can all be used through OpenAI’s web interface, having a dedicated app makes a tool like ChatGPT even more useful for everyday use. Android app users will be able to use it for free, and will also be able to sync their chat history across different devices. Because it works across multiple devices, and across both iOS and Android, users will be able to sync and view conversations they had on iOS from their Android device, and vice versa. That said, since the two platforms have different operating systems, the experience won’t be perfectly identical and may differ in some ways.
ChatGPT’s Android app will not share user information with third-party organizations or businesses. User data will be kept secure, and users who wish to delete their data can request to have it removed.
Via Twitter, OpenAI also shared that “the Android app will be available to users next week.” No details have yet been shared about which countries will be able to download the Android app, or any further rollout plans. Those who haven’t pre-registered yet can do so now through the ChatGPT app listing on the Google Play Store.
