Facebook, MPT launch Discover mobile web and Android app in Myanmar

Facebook and Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) launched a trial of Discover, a new mobile web and Android app that can be used to browse the internet using a daily balance of free data from MPT.

Though Myanmar has achieved significant growth in-network coverage and internet access thanks to sector liberalization, there remain many who are under-connected and regularly drop off from the internet for a period of time when they exhaust their data balance. Discover is designed to help people stay on the internet more consistently by bridging these gaps and helping to keep MPT subscribers connected until they can buy data again. Photo Source https://connectivity.fb.com/discover/

As the region continues to address the COVID-19 health crisis, it’s important to explore ways to help people in Myanmar stay connected, have more consistent access to health information and other resources on the internet, and be able to stay connected with their friends and loved ones. To help connect people to accurate health information, COVID-19 health resources will also be highlighted on the Discover homepage.

As emphasized by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, access to digital services plays a critical role during COVID-19. To help support connectivity and access, Discover is being provided during this period while the tariff and pricing framework is suspended by the regulator, Posts and Telecommunications Department (PTD).

“The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has encouraged Myanmar’s mobile operators to provide more affordable services to the people. We welcome this initiative by Facebook and Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) to launch Discover, which allows people to browse the internet using a daily balance of free data from the mobile operator. This will improve access to information and other resources on the internet, including accurate health information”, said U Soe Thein, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

“Facebook Connectivity and MPT are pleased to launch Discover in Myanmar today. We believe it’s particularly important to help people stay connected during this time, and Discover will contribute to these efforts. Discover is designed to help people stay on the internet more consistently. We’ll also be assessing how Discover can help support internet adoption in Myanmar,” said Tom Chottayil Varghese, Head of Connectivity and Access Policy (APAC), Facebook. Photo Source https://connectivity.fb.com/discover/

“MPT’s goal since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak has been to keep Myanmar connected. With the launch of Discover, in partnership with Facebook, our customers will be able to stay connected with their family and friends more consistently and have better access to important and accurate health information online. I am confident that Discover will bring many benefits to our customers and communities nationwide,” said Tetsunori Nagashima, Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations.

Discover is a mobile web and Android app that can be used to browse any website on the internet available through MPT using a daily balance of free data from MPT. Discover supports only low-bandwidth traffic when using free data. Video, audio, and certain other types of data-intensive traffic are not supported when using free data. All websites are treated equally.

MPT subscribers can access Discover by visiting 0.discoverapp.com on any mobile web browser using any type of mobile device, including basic feature phones, as well as by downloading the Discover app in the Google Play Store. To learn more about Discover, visit https://connectivity.fb.com/discover/.
