Say “the richest person in the world” and most people immediately picture Microsoft founder Bill Gates — and for good reason, since he’s claimed the No. 1 spot on the world’s richest list for what feels like almost every year running.
In Forbes magazine’s 2017 list of the world’s wealthiest people, Gates held onto the No. 1 spot for a fourth year in a row. Over the past 23 years, he’s actually topped the list 18 separate times. His net worth is estimated at around $86 billion.
This year’s Forbes list of the world’s richest people includes a total of 183 tech figures alongside Gates. Combined, their fortunes are estimated to add up to around $1 trillion.
Gates took the top spot this year, while Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ranked No. 5. Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, came in at No. 7.
This year’s Forbes billionaires list included 2,043 people in total — the highest number in the 30 years the list has been compiled. By country, the U.S. led with 565 billionaires, followed by China with 319.
