Ericsson predicts sevenfold increase of data usage in Southeast Asia and Oceania by 2024
Ericsson reported in Mobility Report June 2019 that usage of mobile data in Southeast Asia and
Oceania might go up to about seven times around 2024. The report also indicated that monthly
data use for a smartphone could rise about 29%, from 6GB to 17GB, and the reasons include
wider use of 4G LTE and tremendous changes in media viewership among the youth today.
Moreover, the total amount of data used in 2018 among Southeast Asia and Oceania was 2.3EB
so it is estimated that data usage could escalate seven times at 16EB by 2024.

It is further estimated that in 2024, the number of smartphone users in these nations will increase
to over a billion, and the compound annual growth rate will be 8%. As of 2018, there were 80
million mobile phone users and the compound annual growth rate was 7%, so by 2024 it will
grow to 1.7 billion.
‘Before the 5G network dominates the market, 4G LTE will continue to be used in these regions
till 2024. In areas where data usage is high, video streaming from mobile phones is going to be
the main activity and viewers will watch and share live videos more increasingly. Such videos
are also linked to online content as well. But that’s not all. According to smartphone consumer
behaviour, if global users were allowed to use 5G, it is expected that this network would
encourage the use of applications which incorporate augmented reality, ’said Eric Timmer, Head
of Ericsson Myanmar.

It is estimated by Ericsson Mobility Report that there was a 40% increase in 4G LTE network
users in 2018, so by the end of 2024, the number of mobile network users can increase to 63%.
Mobile phones and accessories that support initial 5G networks will be available for use in the
first half of 2019. 12% of the total users will be able to use 5G network and thus 5G network will
be globally consumed sooner than expected.
Since a rapid increase in 5G network consumers is certain, other estimations have been impacted
by it. By the end of 2024, 5G network will be the service provider for 45% of the world’s
population. 5G network can effortlessly replace the wireless 4G broadband LTE network so it
can surge to a 65% rise.

‘5G is taking off rapidly. This reflects the enthusiasm of 5G service providers and consumers.
5G network is set to create a positive impact on people’s lives and businesses, rising beyond the
Internet of Things and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Folks who operate in technology, rules
and regulations, security and industrial sectors need to be able to build a strong ecosystem so that
the full benefits of 5G could be felt,’ said Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of
Networks at Ericsson.

Once service providers across markets produce smartphones compatible with 5G network, it will
be ready to use. Other service providers and initial 5G network providers are working towards
serving up to 90% of the population.
