Instagram Introduces New Broadcast Channel Feature for Creators

Instagram, which is constantly rolling out new ways to help creators connect with their followers and audiences, has announced a new Broadcast Channel feature for creators. Mark Zuckerberg shared the news via his own Meta Channel on Instagram.

A Broadcast Channel is a one-to-many messaging tool that lets creators invite their followers and send them text, videos, and photos. Voice notes can reportedly be shared too, along with a poll feature for gathering follower feedback. On a Broadcast Channel, only the creator who sets it up can send messages, while followers can react to content and vote in polls.

Here are some of the creators who are already using Broadcast Channels. Broadcast Channels are currently only accessible from mobile devices.

When a creator with Broadcast Channel access sends their first message, Instagram will send a one-time notification prompting their followers to join the channel. Anyone can view a Broadcast Channel, but only those who join will get notifications about updates. Followers can leave a channel at any time and can also turn notifications on or off. Once Broadcast Channels roll out to everyone, creators will be able to add a “Join Channel” button to their profile and Stories.

Creators who want to open their Broadcast Channel to all their followers need to set the Channel Audience to “All Followers.” It’s also reported that a Broadcast Channel option limited to paid subscribers will be introduced.

Broadcast Channels are currently being tested with a small group of creators. Creators who want early access to try out Broadcast Channels on mobile can sign up for the waitlist. Broadcast Channel is launching as a new Instagram feature first, and is reportedly set to be tested on Facebook and Messenger in the coming months.
