Following a wave of AI launches from tech companies around the world, Meta has introduced its own AI assistant, Meta AI, built on Meta Llama 3. Meta AI is a free AI assistant that can be used directly on your devices, and it’s also available on Meta’s Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram platforms. Outside the US, it’s initially rolling out in more than a dozen countries, including Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, and South Africa.
Meta AI can handle tasks such as making recommendations, organizing tasks, explaining things, and generating images. Beyond phones, it’s also accessible from a computer through the website meta.ai. Users who log in to Meta AI can also have their conversations saved.
Since it’s an AI built by Meta, it’s naturally available across Meta’s own platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. One added advantage is being able to pull up real-time information without switching between apps — for example, if you ask Meta AI a question inside a Messenger group chat, you can see the answer right there without ever leaving the app.
While browsing your Facebook Newsfeed, if you want to know more about a post that catches your interest, you can simply tap “Ask Meta AI” below the post to get more relevant information.
Meta AI also comes with an image generation feature. One standout advantage of Meta AI’s image generation is its real-time Imagine feature, which updates the generated image as you type each word of your prompt — a feature users are likely to enjoy watching unfold. Meta has also published resources showing exactly how the image changes word by word as you type. Beyond producing high-quality images, you can also ask Meta AI to animate a picture you like, then turn that animation into a GIF to share with friends.
