To mark Safer Internet Day, the ASEAN Foundation, with support from Google.org, held a regional workshop with the ASEAN Youth Advisory Group (ASEAN YAG) in Jakarta, Indonesia, from February 6 to 8, 2023.
The event is part of the ASEAN Digital Literacy Programme (ASEAN DLP), which aims to counter misinformation and the spread of fake news by delivering digital literacy training to young people, teachers, parents, the elderly, community leaders, and government officials. The programme aligns with Safer Internet Day’s theme, “Together for a Better Internet.”

At the workshop, 19 young ASEAN YAG members from all 10 ASEAN countries were selected and trained as partners who will raise awareness of digital literacy and drive change within their own communities. The regional workshop equipped ASEAN YAG members with the knowledge and skills needed to carry out their planned awareness campaigns, including training from experts on how to design media campaign strategies, craft key messages, and effectively engage grassroots communities.
The members’ media literacy awareness campaigns will also scale up to the regional level, aiming to deliver greater impact across the ASEAN community. They will also contribute to detailed research papers and e-learning platforms.

“Each member of the ASEAN Youth Advisory Group we selected last year brings impressive digital literacy insight, broad grassroots community networks, and a deep understanding of local context. They will each run digital literacy campaigns within their own communities to counter misinformation and fake news. Our regional trainers will work together with local partners to help build a safer digital space in the region,” said Dr. Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation.
A year after the programme launched, the ASEAN Foundation has successfully held 89 workshops with around 1,000 regional trainers, in partnership with 14 regional implementing organizations. As of early January 2023, more than 68,000 people had benefited from 134 online and offline digital literacy workshops. The ASEAN DLP aims to raise awareness among more than 100,000 people over its two-year run. In Myanmar, two implementing partner organizations have held workshops with 153 trainers, successfully training 3,966 people.

With a USD 1.5 million grant from Google.org, the ASEAN Foundation will continue working to address fake news and other online safety issues across all 10 ASEAN member states.
The ASEAN Youth Advisory Group Regional Workshop brought together senior ASEAN information officials, an assistant director for the Youth and Sports Division of the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Common Room Network to discuss Safer Internet Day.
