As AI technology keeps advancing, it’s taking on a bigger role across businesses and internet-related services alike. Even in areas that never used to rely on AI, adoption is growing — and in places that have used AI for a long time already, like automatic translation systems, we can’t ignore how much more capable and accurate they’ve become either.
At an AI-focused event held in Paris on February 8, Google announced upcoming updates to Google Translate. Google is currently testing a new feature called Contextual Translation, which translates a searched term based on the context it appears in.
Contextual Translation stands to make AI-powered translation noticeably more precise. For people just starting to learn a language in particular, it will surface related words and alternate meanings for a searched term all at once, while also helping them land on the exact meaning they’re trying to express.

As shown in the image, the word “novel” has three distinct meanings in English — “a piece of fiction, something new, or something unique” — and when translated into French, each of those meanings maps to a different word: “novel, nouveau, and original.” This kind of feature is set to be a big help for both translators and language learners alike.
With Contextual Translation, Google will be able to show word-by-word meanings when translating between English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and German. The feature is also set to expand to other languages within a few months. Google says the Contextual Translation update will roll out within the next few weeks, and five more languages will be added later this year.
Google also recently revamped Google Lens with a new AR Translate Lens feature. It uses Pixel’s Magic Eraser technology to remove existing text and insert the translated text back in a style that matches the original.
Google says that within the next few years, AI-powered translation systems will make its translation services faster and even more accurate than they are today.
